Introduction to Cultural Responsiveness

This section is meant to help providers become more sensitive to and aware of the general health beliefs and practices of a culture that may be unfamiliar. Please keep in mind it can in no way capture the breadth and richness of the culture, nor can the information be generalized to all people of that culture. It is important to ask patients and families presenting for care about their own beliefs and practices relevant to their own health and treatment.

The information in this section was originally published in the Spring 2002 Issue 13 of Resource: The Bellevue Hospital Patient Education Newsletter for Staff, Dorothy Spurgiasz & Mildred D’Souza editors. This newsletter is published quarterly by the Patient and Family Education Team, Bellevue Hospital Center, New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. The article is posted here with permission of the editors.
