Our Mission

Medical Chinese and Cultural Competency Initiative — Improving Patient Care in the Chinese Community by Reducing Language and Cultural Barriers.

New York University School of Medicine Medical Chinese encourages and facilitates the learning and utilization of medical Chinese in healthcare settings to reduce physician-patient communication barriers faced by Limited English Proficient (LEP) Chinese-speaking patients. Medical Chinese continually strives to improve its curriculum, initiate and advance similar programs at other medical schools and institutions, and reach out to practicing healthcare professionals in the US.

Medical Chinese offers resources to students and healthcare professionals who want to provide more comprehensive and culturally sensitive care to LEP Chinese-speaking patients. This online teaching module not only complements the curriculum taught in medical Chinese class at NYU School of Medicine, but also serves the needs of the healthcare community at large.

Medical Chinese Class at NYU School of Medicine

The Medical Chinese curriculum is taught in both Cantonese and Mandarin and includes three essential components: completing the course, participating in the Objective Standardized Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and volunteering to serve in the Chinese-speaking community. Interested participants register through the Master Scholars Program each semester and may participate in Cantonese, Mandarin, or both. Each class has a maximum of 25 students who are expected to complete 14 lessons and two OSCEs by the end of two semesters.

The course is designed so that speakers of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced participants, will benefit. The emphasis is on developing speaking and listening skills, so even though Chinese characters are printed in the lesson books, classes are conducted with an alphabet-based pronunciation system: Pinyin for Mandarin and the Yale system for Cantonese. The first semester focuses on patient history questions and the second on physical exam and systems-based questions. Each lesson begins with key sentences and questions and ends with a relevant vocabulary list.
During the OSCE at the end of each semester, all participants are evaluated on their ability to elicit appropriate information from a Chinese-speaking patient-actor. Participants are given medical Chinese pocket cards as quick references to phrases and vocabulary useful in the OSCE and healthcare settings.
